HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:

 

The Department of Microbiology is functioning at CoimbatoreMedical College since 1968. It was initially started as - Department of Bacteriology - , now well established in all branches of Microbiology. HighQuality education is provided with well experienced and eminent Professors andother teaching Faculties. We offer UG & PG Medical courses such as MBBS, MD.,under
Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai and DMLT (paramedical course) under King Institute of preventive medicine, Chennai. It is an examination center for private paramedical courses also.

We have a well aerated spacious lecture hall with LCD projector and UPS system for students; Practical hall for UG students with separate instruments for individual training; Demonstration hall for seminars; Separate PG research laboratory with latest instruments for research activities with financial sponsorship; Microbiology museum for all students with models and all specimens; Excellent student library with the latest publications of various Books and journals in branches of Microbiology with internet and seating facility for studying. Special attention and individual care given for UG & PG students with good guidance and encouragements in research activities.

It has a Full fledged Microbiology Diagnostic laboratory service, RT PCR Laboratory especially for Swine flu diagnosis and it act as a State Reference Laboratory for HIV/AIDS (Totally 84 ICTCs attached from Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Nilgiris Districts) and State Reference Centerfor STI/RTI.  It is a Regional Training Center for Bio medical Waste Management for Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts.

4)    Biomedical waste management Phase I training conducted from October 2011 to December 2011 for all staffs of Coimbatore Medical College and around 1470 persons trained.

1)     Biomedicalwaste management training:

The Department of  Microbiology, Coimbatore Medical College is a Regional centre for conducting the programme.

Phase I training conducted from October 2011 to December 2011 for all staffs of Coimbatore Medical College and around 1470 persons trained.

Phase II training started on January 2012 and Health staffs of Coimbatore and Nilgiris District trained.

 

2)     PCR Laboratory for diagnosis of  H1N1Influenza virus ( swine flu):

This lab is functioning since January 2011.  Realtime PCR machine with Bio safety cabinet level III & II has been installed.Tests are performed by trained Personnel.

At present it isbeing utilized for diagnosis of swine flu and will be used for other tests also in the near future ie., diagnosis of HBV, CMV, EBV and Toxoplasma viruses.            

 

3)     STI/ RTI supervision:

Periodic supervisory visits to STI Clinics located at Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tirupur,Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri Districts.

4)     VVIPfood sampling and analysis:

A team comprising Microbiologist sent for collection of food samples formicrobiological testing during VVIP visit to Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tirupur, andErode Districts.
