The department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was started in the late sixties with 3 physiotherapists. Subsequently the orthotic center was added in the year 1968.
The department became more organized with a Physiatrist (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist) taking the leadership role for medical rehabilitation of the patients in the eighties.

Theory classes are regularly conducted for under-graduate medical students and clinical training for orthopaedic post-graduate students. Physiotherapy internees from private physiotherapy colleges get posted to our department for training in various specialties.
In addition to numerous books on rehabilitation in the main college library, we also have a departmental library consisting of 29 Reference books for the use of staff and students.
· Rehabilitation services
Both out-patients and in-patients services are provided by the doctors, physiotherapists and ALSC staff depending upon the need of the patients. In-patients are referred from various departments like orthopaedics, general medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery for physiotherapy and rehabilitation program.

The department has many useful electrotherapy equipments, like shortwave diathermy, ultrasound therapy, interferential therapy, TENS, electrical muscle stimulation, wax therapy, cervical and pelvic Traction, continuous passive movement machine.
· Exercise therapy
The department has a modern multi-gym equipment for strengthening program. It also has shoulder wheel, parallel bar with mirror, sliding seat, stationary cycle, wrist and forearm exerciser.
Calipers, Splints, Braces are fabricated and provided for patients at the Orthotic center.
· Other services to the differently abled persons
The process of certification for the differently abled persons has been streamlined and they get the certificates without any hardship or delay. Train travel concession for eligible persons is also issued. Camps are conducted periodically for the differently abled persons for issuing necessary certificates, identifying patients for surgery and social welfare needs.
