::Departments : Pre - Clinical : Physiology




            The Department of Physiology, Coimbatore Medical College, Coimbatore, was started way back in 1965. 
To begin with the department offered teaching facilities for 100 MBBS Students.Since then the department metamorphosed into a flourishing teaching facility under eminent professors.

           The department became a full fledged PG institution in2003 .The PG programme started with 2 MD [physiology] students per year & has now increased to 4 MD [physiology] students per year from 2010 onwards. Already 7 batches of PG Students have successfully passed out and are now working aseminent teachers in various institutions across TamilNadu.

            The department offers teaching facilityto 150 medical students, 4 MD[Physiology] PG Students, D. Pharm students & students belongings tovarious Para medical courses.

              The department is fully equipped with separate Hematology, Amphibian, Mammalian and clinical physiology laboratories.

               The department library possesses 254 titles of books and latest journals.

The department has a fully equipped Research laboratory   with advanced & sophisticated instruments like Polygraph, Computerized bicycle ergometer, Polysomnograph, Audiometer, Neuroperfect etc.

              Research activities in diverse fields are going on in the department and paper presentations are done regularly in various conferences, CMEs etc.

At he end of the course the student shall be able to

 Explain the normal functioning of all the organ systems and their interactions for well coordinated total body function;

 Assess the relative contribution of each organ system to the maintenance of the  milieu interior;

 Elucidate the physiological aspects of normal growth and development;

  Describe the physiological response and adaptation to environmental stresses;

 List the physiological principles underlying pathogenesis and treatment of  disease.


At he end of the course the student shall be able to

 conduct experiments designed for the study of physiological phenomena

  interpret experimental / investigative data;

 Distinguish between normal and abnormal data derived as a result of tests which he/ she has performed and observed in the laboratory.


 At the end of the integrated teaching the student shall acquire an integrated knowledge of organ structure and function and its regulatory mechanisms.

4.Post graduate integrated lecture series II on central nervous system & special senses for MD Physiology students of Tamil nadu on 11.11.2011.
               5. CME on Hypertension - a radical approach which was coonducted on 5th  December 2012.

The department has successfully conducted APTCON -2010 - Association of Physiologists of Tamil Nadu Annual conference which was attended by physiologists from various parts of India.



                   Prof. DR. N. Neelambikai has been recently awarded THE BEST TEACHER AWARD for the year 2012 by the TN Dr. MGR Medical University.

    Trends of Intraocular pressure in different status of women- was awarded as 2nd  best paper presented at APTCON 2007 at Sri Balaji Medical College, Chennai.

    Effect of exercise onoxygen saturation in smokers vs Non smokers- was awarded as 1st best paper presented at APTCON 2009 at Madras Medical College, Chennai.

    Post graduate students Dr.Subathra & Dr. Soundarya won 1st prize in the quiz competition conducted at Mangalore medical college.

    Postgraduate students Dr. Subathra & Dr. Soundarya won 1st prize in the quiz competition conducted at Kottayam Medical College, Kerala.

    Postgraduate students Dr. Rekha & Dr. Nithyavikashini won the 4th place at

                     the intermedical Quizon endocrinology held at KMC Chennai

      The under graduatestudents of CMC   won 1st prize in the Pulmoquest - 08 a quiz competition held in Respiratory physiology at IRT Perundurai Medical College, Perundurai.
