CMCH PERFORMS RARE SURGERY ON 8 YEAR BOY

An eight year old boy from Tirupur, came with a swelling in his jaw. His father, Yogabalan , a painter, took him to a private hospital in Perundurai. He was referred to CMCH on April 10. The MRI scan revealed that a jaw tumour which is rare namely, Juvenile Ossifying Fibroma was diagnosed.
Medical Superintendent Prof.Dr.B.Asokan told journalists that this condition, is a rare tumour which is locally aggressive and has high chances of recurrence. He further added that only one in a lakh children below the age of 10 get affected by this condition. An advanced surgical procedure called “ Segmental Mandibulectomy” was performed on April 12, 2015.
CMCH Dean Dr.A.Edwin Joe added that had the surgery been performed in private hospital it would have incurred an expense of Rs.4 Lakh for the patient which the family could not afford . It was performed free of cost under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.
